Last week's edition of "What's Cooking" was the first of a mini series of seven articles on International dishes and recipes which, amongst others, will feature at the Rustenburg church - Vantage Point's International Food Festival on Friday, 27 May. Food from around the world is the theme for this Food Festival and strangely enough, Vantage Point congregation is fortunate to indeed have several "international" families among its "sheep".
The Vantage Point Food Festival is a community outreach project and aimed at spreading the love of Jesus Christ to literally all corners of the world. Well-known international dishes such as Italian, Greek, Portuguese, Indian, German, and yes, even Korean will be available at the festival. For visitors there will also be coffee, tea, cake and live "café" music. Please take note - there is no entrance fee for the occasion and small "meals" are offered at R15 per portion in order for visitors to taste as many dishes as possible. But let's get back to the cooking fires... In this second edition of Vantage Point's cooking series, we were treated by our Korean hosts - Daniel, Ruth and baby Nael of Noble Palms School (a mission school) some 17 km from Rustenburg. Daniel and Ruth have prepared traditional Korean Bulgogi - a dish prepared from thinly sliced sirloin or tenderloin beef...

Ingredients:
500 g of thinly sliced sirloin or tenderloin beef
marinade sauce: 2 tbs of soy sauce, 3 tbs of water, 2 tbs of sugar,
1/2 tbs of sesame oil, 1/2t s of black pepper, 4 cloves of minced garlic
1 spring onion (sliced)
2 brown onion (sliced)
1 apple
(cloves)
1 carrot (sliced)
300 g Korean (Chinese) noodles
250 g mushroom (sliced)

Method:
Thinly slice 500 g of sirloin or tenderloin beef against the grain. Mix the ingredients to make a marinade. Add the beef to the marinade and keep in the fridge at least 30 minutes. If your cut of beef is tough, you can marinate it for longer to soften it, or use a apple or pear in the marinade. Cut spring onion and brown onion and carrot and mushroom. Place the noodles in the cold water for 1 hour. Then take it out and keep in a bowl. Cook marinade with all ingredients in a pan or pot with the vegetables and noodles until done and serve.
Serving method: Bulgogi is traditionally served with rice. Once your rice is cooked and ready, firmly press a single serving into a cup or very small pot, then turn over onto a plate and carefully dish up onto the plate for a more interesting presentation.
Daniel, Ruth and Nael are dressed in traditional Korean attire called Hanbok. Hanbok is traditionally worn on special celebrations, weddings, festivals and commemorations of important events.
