The saying goes, a match made in heaven – or in the case of Pieter Jordaan and Natasha van der Merwe - a match made in the kitchen.
For many couples, attempting to cook together might end up in talks of divorce, but there are a few blessed relationships where meeting in the heart of the house, (ie the kitchen) also leads to relationship bliss.
Last week, our readers were entertained by Pieter’s family recipe of garlic snails, and this week, his fiancée, Natasha van der Merwe, proves that the way to a man’s heart is definitely through his stomach – with her not-so-traditional Boere-recipe of dumplings (souskluitjies). Natasha made her version of the dumplings with an orange zest – yes, you read correctly.
So, if you are a baker or a dessert maker who likes to experiment in the kitchen – this recipe is sure to tickle your fancy!

Ingredients – sauce

¾ Cups of brown sugar
⅓ Cup caramel syrup
50 g Butter
2 Cups water
The zest of half an orange
1 Teaspoon of cinnamon

Ingredients – dumplings

1 ½ cups of self raising flour
¾ cup of milk
50 g Butter
2 Tablespoons of syrup

Method

• Before preparing the dumplings, mix all the ingredients for the sauce in a large pot and heat/cook on the stove.
• In a separate bowl, combine the butter and self raising flour until it forms small lumps
• Mix the milk, butter and syrup
• Dish teaspoon-sized portions of the dumplings into the prepared syrup mix
• Cook for 20 minutes, with the lid on
• Scoop out the cooked dumplings, drain and serve with vanilla ice cream.
