Former Miss SA adores shisa nyama
Thato Mosehle still had her eyes on the Miss SA crown when she cooked lamb chops with pap and chakalaka for us. That year she went on to win the title but in her heart she is still the little girl who grew up in Stilfontein and likes pap en vleis. This is her recipe.
This meal takes me about 40 mins to make.
Chakalaka (serves 4)
You will need:
• Cooking oil
• 2 carrots (grated)
• 1 onion (chopped)
• 1 Koo hot and spicy chakalaka 215g can
• Worcester sauce
• Wellingtons Sweet Chilli sauce 1 tablespoon
• Barbeque spice
• Six gun grill spice 1 teaspoon
• 1 ½ teaspoon sugar
Steps: • Add the cooking oil to a hot pan • Add the onions, fry until
golden • Add the grated carrots, fry until slightly brown • Add Six Gun
grill and barbeque spice while frying • Add the can of Koo hot and spicy
chakalaka (open windows because spice might suffocate you) • Add 2
tablespoons of worcester sauce • Lower the heat and then add Wellingtons
sweet chilli sauce • Add sugar then allow to simmer for 3 mins and serve!
Lamb Chops:
You will need:
• Cooking oil • 4 lamb chops
• Worcester sauce • Jimmy's steakhouse sauce
• Six gun grill spice • Steak and chops spice
Steps: • Marinate the meat for at least 30 min in worcester sauce and six gun grill spice • Add oil to a medium heat pan • Fry the meat on each side, alternating sides every 5 min • Add steak and chops spice as you fry
• Once almost done, add Jimmy's steak house sauce (to cover all pieces) and then turn to low heat and allow to simmer for 5 mins • Serve!
Pap: Pap is pap. - I make mine by boiling water then adding it to a hot pot, mixing the pap in until it's the texture of a very thick porridge. Then I stir it about every 8-10 mins over a 30-40 min period.
