When South Africans come together for a braai, there's usually a host of side-dishes that compliment the menu and more often than not, you will find that some of these side-dishes are way better than the main course on the menu. Traditionally a braai is complimented by pap (especially in the Western Cape) toasted sandwiches and a host of salads such as potato or rice salad. Some folks prefer freshly-baked bread and others enjoy the ever popular chips.
In this week's edition of our weekly "cook" the second batch of Mrs Rustenburg finalists in this year's Mrs Rustenburg competition, comes up with a simple but very tasty beans, cucumber & chakalaka which is enjoyed with ordinary pap.
In is interesting to note that the somewhat hot chakalaka really compliments the taste and flavour of your meat - a surprisingly good combination!

The beans & chakalaka recipe is prepared as follows:

Start off by making ordinary pap - enough for six to eight people.
Though the pap is an ever popular dish, the secret is in the chakalaka and beans.
This you do as follows:

Beans & Cucumber Chakalaka

Ingredients:

1 can of Chakalaka hot & Spicy
1 can of Koo baked beans
1 fresh cucumber
Maggi Sweet Chilli seasoning

Method:

Chop the cucumber into several small pieces and mix with the Chakalaka, beans, cucumber and season to taste. Serve a generous helping of pap and cover with the chilli Chakalaka beans and cucumber "sauce" as a side-dish with your meat. The quite hot chilli chakalaka beans and cucumber is a winner - especially during the winter and also brings out the flavour of your meat.
